Sottsass first saw Kachina in 1956 at George Nelson's office in New York.
According to Wikipedia, "Kachinas are supernatural spirits worshipped primarily by the Hopi Native American tribe. ... It is said that there are more than 400 Hopi kachinas in total, but no one knows the exact number." Sottsass also considered kachinas to be supernatural beings, unknown spirits and forms that are neither gods nor humans. They are unknown forms that (supposedly) bring good fortune. Sottsass compared kachinas to the four-leaf clovers he received from his girlfriend and the amulets he received from friends. Sottsass first saw kachinas in 1956, in George Nelson's office in New York. He apparently came up with several new kachinas at the time, but never put them into practice, and apparently even forgot about them. Decades later, feeling as if the unknown was spreading around him, Sottsass decided to design kachinas again. (2004)
